“The Wounded Stork” is a quiet meditation on motherhood, identity, and belonging as Makhosi navigates the subtle cultural nuances of raising a biracial family in London, turning the ordinary reflective through subtle motifs of nature and freedom.

Samantha Keller was born in South Africa and made her way via London, two children, and a career in advertising, to the US, where she completed her MFA at Fairfield University in Connecticut. Sam's short fiction has been a Narrative Story of the Week, a contest finalist in ASF's Halifax Ranch Fiction Prize, and shortlisted in the Bridport Prize. She has fiction forthcoming in The Connecticut Literary Anthology 2024 and recently won the Anthony Grooms Prize through The Headlight Review. Her first novel, The Light Remains, received an honorary mention in the Fairfield Book Prize and will be published in 2025.
